Esquire Philippines presents extraordinary wisdom on How To Be A Man in its July issue. “Every issue of our Esquire is for and about Filipino men. This one, specifically, is about how to be one. It is about being better men than we already are because we know that it is in the making that makes the man... Ultimately, it is about doing things that need to be done--and to be happy that we’ve done a good job of it. The way that only a real man could,” says Esquire Philippines editor-in-chief Erwin Romulo.
Who better teach every Filipino how to be a man than the most powerful person in the Philippines? This July, President Benigno S. Aquino III honors Esquire Philippines with an exclusive interview in what promises to be the most remarkable issue to date. “Am I satisfied? I am never satisfied,” the Chief Executive talks about why he pushes for transformation, how he always remembers the bearer of false promises, which “perpetrators” he’ll be keenly watching, and where he’ll kick back after his 2016 reign.
“My critics will insist that [I decide important matters hastily]. I’m tempted to challenge them to a debate. Why don’t you ask me how I made my decision and show me where my reasoning was faulty? So, if I have a critic, and he makes sense, then I will seek him out. I will try to get his positive point and incorporate it,” the President imparts wisdom with Esquire Philippines.
To be a man entails accepting that being born male does not make one a man, it is about making the best of what is given--whether warranted or not. Case in point: getting older. In How I Am Getting Old, Esquire editor-at-large Sarge Lacuesta writes a movie piece to his son on some thoughts about fate, experience, aging, death, and the future. “If I had died at an early age, I would not have known what it is like to change one’s point of view, for better or for worse, as one passes from one life stage to another,” Sarge writes.
When it comes to the question of being a man and all it encapsulates, Esquire features six men--Esquire food and drinks editor Erwann Heussaff, musician Bamboo, newsman Patrick Paez, businessman Atom Henares, dancer and teacher Nonoy Froilan, and politician Rudy Fariñas--who know what it truly means to be one in What I’ve Learned (According to Six Men You Should Know).
Also in this issue is Esquire’s 2013 guide on How To Be A Man When Things Go Wrong for those inevitable scenarios where there are no rules and everything is out of control; the founding chairman of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) Jose Maria Sison in Man at His Best; and Esquire’s guide in eating like a man.
