Pop Fiction booksSummit Media's Pop Fiction imprint has published 20 books since 2013, all based on works by Wattpad writers

Summit Media, one of the country’s leading book publishers, and Wattpad, the world’s largest community of readers and writers, have inked a partnership for the Philippine territory that will make Summit Media’s Pop Fiction imprint Wattpad’s preferred publishing partner in the Philippines.

Pop Fiction and Wattpad will work closely together to develop and market books by Wattpad writers in the Philippines, which is among the company’s biggest markets in the world. More than 20 million people have joined Wattpad, which offers stories in more than 50 languages.

“We are very excited about this partnership because it will help us identify possible break-out works more quickly and will help us market the books to Wattpad’s huge following,” says Lisa Gokongwei-Cheng, Summit Media President. “Wattpad is a giant phenomenon in the Philippines and has changed the book industry locally. It allows us to spot writers who have a big following online and helps us translate this following into real-world sales. We have seen this happen with many of our authors who started out on Wattpad.” According to Gokongwei-Cheng, Wattpad story “She’s Dating the Gangster” by author Bianca Bernandino is one such example. The book has been a number one bestseller in National Book Store, and will be released as a movie by Star Cinema in the third quarter of this year. Other Wattpad stories are already being optioned by other film and television companies.

“Our partnership with Summit Media celebrates self-expression and storytelling in the Philippines,” said Allen Lau, Wattpad CEO and co-founder. “Wattpad wants to connect the world through stories. Summit Media’s far-reaching distribution channels will connect popular Wattpad writers with even more readers around the country, and the world.”

The two companies will begin their partnership by naming ten new writers in May that will be published within the year. Their books will be heavily promoted through the Wattpad and Summit Media networks.
