Summit Publishing Digital Images Guidelines
Image Preparation
- Summit Publishing requires PHOTOSHOP RGB working space to be Adobe RGB 1998 (16 bit). Select this on your camera as well as in Photoshop. Save your processed Raw file as the highest quality RGB tiff with this working space embedded after adjustments are made. The resolution should be 300 dpi at the size we print in the magazine.
- Don't over sharpen images for output. Sharp captures should require minimal sharpening and output sharpening will be addressed by Summit, based on the different degrees of sharpening required for different printing conditions.
- Shoot always in RAW and convert – with the embedded profile – to RGB tiff using Photoshop CS.
- When supplying digital images to Summit keep adjustment of images to a minimum, limit it to only the following: dust removal, color correction (color cast removal), contrast adjustment and exposure adjustment. This can all be done in the Camera RAW dialog box of Photoshop CS before converting to RGB tiff file with embedded profile.
-
Never shoot in jpeg! This file format is only for amateurs who have limited memory cards.
The camera’s computer has made 'adjustments' to a jpg file, but a raw file is pure and the closest equivalent to undeveloped film, a digital negative. - All your adjustments should be done in Raw RGB in file browser before you bring it into Photoshop. This will minimize distraction to the image.
- Under no circumstances should you convert your files to CMYK, you have to supply RGB Tiff files only.
Delivery
- Summit requires submission of the maximum number of edited images possible. (By edited we mean removal of images that are out of focus or un-useable, not color corrected). At least 4-5 options per set up. It is unacceptable to send only ONE image per layout to an art director. Preferably, we would like to see as many options as possible in low resolution jpg, then we will choose a high resolution image on which you can do your final re-touching and color correcting.
- Always preserve embedded working space (including camera profile).
- Supply maximum file size.
- All files to be correctly orientated.
- Supply on CD or DVD for large jobs.
- Supply low resolution jpg (with watermark) as viewing files
In summary:
Use Adobe RGB color space
Shoot in Raw
16 bit
Convert to RGB Tiff
Supply files in RGB, NOT CMYK
Supply low-res preview files with watermark so low-res files cannot be accidentally used
