File Compression
As a general rule, we are not encouraging file compression for submission of your ad materials. Decompression can take time and we prefer that you do not compress files being submitted on disk unless it is necessary to fit files onto the desired media.
However, for Advertisers who find it impossible to make it to the set deadline of submission of electronic files on CDR/DVDR (i.e. Advertisers outside the Philippines) we’ll be requesting you to email us at intet.victoriano[at]summitmedia.com.ph or bong.carolino[at]summitmedia.com.ph so we can let you know our FTP address and password. However, if you have your own FTP site, it is also possible that you email us your own FTP address and password so we can retrieve your files the soonest possible time.
In this case, we recommend compressing files to speed up the transmission time and to prevent corruption of your files. You can use the Stuffit or Zip It (for Macintosh) programs to compress your files. If you need additional information on sending digital files via FTP, email us and we’ll try to answer your queries on this matter.
Furthermore, for quick and easy file delivery, we are employing a new online digital file delivery system with the help of QUICKCUT Digital Ad Validation and Delivery System (www.quickcut.com). It does not only offer quick 24-hour file transfer capability, it also facilitates file checking according to our specifications including the application of industry-standard ICC profiles (ISOcoated_v2_eci.icc) and printable PDF file format (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 standard and PDF versions 1.3 & 1.5) from your desktop.

DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS
Document Set-up
Submit your raw files, including all the images and font types together with the layout file. Please name your file in a way that will obviously connect it to you (or your company) and the job itself
(Product Name)_(Magazine Name)_(Page Size)_(Issue Month & Year)
Example:
Omega_Cosmo_FP_March06
Cetrinets_Totalgirl_1/2h_March06Label your disks with your company name, contact person/s, address, phone number together with the completely filled out Summit Digital Ad Job Order Form ready for download.
Set all document pages to the final trim size to ensure correct size and to allow the page layout application to create accurate crop and registration marks. Please supply your file on a single page layout. If you have a document that will be in spread, please do not set it up in reader’s spreads. Printer’s spreads are preferred, but if you are not knowledgeable about setting up spreads, please provide single pages. Be sure to provide enough image area for bleed by making sure all images and elements that print to the edge extend a minimum of 1/8” beyond trimming.
Include only the most current version of the document to be printed and no unnecessary or alternate versions of text files, fonts, or images on the disk.

Image Formats
Many different formats for saving files exists with a variety of different uses, but as a rule only TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) and EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) are suitable for high-resolution imaging. Some other formats often seen are PICT, PNTG, BMP, and WMF. These should be converted to TIFF or EPS files at the proper resolution. So as to ensure good quality print of our magazines we require all submitted files to be 300dpi (Dots Per Inch). Files in GIF and JPG formats are used almost exclusively for Internet applications and are not suitable for print purposes.
Important Things To Know Before Creating Your Ad Layout
Resolution
If you design a job at 72dpi or lower know that WE CANNOT USE YOUR FILE. As troubleshooting, our pre-press will resize it to 300dpi therefore “stretching” the image. See the illustration below where one image was created at 300dpi, the other was created at 72dpi and then stretched to 300dpi. The end product isn’t that attractive, thus we are encouraging you to create your layout setting your resolution to 300dpi. Here’s the formula in getting the right image resolution: Dpi = Lpi * 1.5

Crisp & Clear Blurry & Fuzzy

Hardcopy Proof
The client must provide a deskjet proof with all electronic files. This shall serve ONLY as layout guide for Service Providers and NEVER as color reference. For magazine type jobs, please provide a mock-up guide indicating your material’s pagination. The same also applies for jobs with special instructions and die cutting.

COLOR REQUIREMENTS
There are two types of color spaces that are used for graphic and print design:
CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black)
These are the colors used in offset printing. When setting up colors in your desktop programs, please make sure you have spot colors and process color specified as such. When working in Photoshop or scanning color art, please work in CMYK mode, untagged profile. Total ink density should not exceed 330%.RGB (Red, Green, Blue)
These are standard colors, as viewed in our monitors.CMYK Color shifts are usually not visible in color photographs; however, rich and solid colors (like a background) can be affected by a color conversion. Most of the time, color shifts are minor and may not be noticeable.

If it looks like this on your monitor..
It will look like this when it is printedImage Color Requirements
Image supplied should be:
- RGB – untagged profile, include layered document – do not flatten (preferred)
- CMYK – untagged profile, as much as possible do not flatten also.
Using the color BLACK
Rich Black
Large, solid black areas and text over 36 points should use Rich Black so the material wouldn’t look gray on final print. Rich Black consists of 60% Cyan, 30% Magenta, 30% Yellow, 100% Black. However, for regular body text, DO NOT USE Rich Black.

4 Color Build Black
If you have small, thin text on your piece, it is STRONGLY recommended that you DO NOT USE 4-color build black on your piece. This will only make your text blurry and at times, unreadable.
Process printing uses 4 plates that overlay to achieve full color spectrum on paper. Although precise, it is possible that misregistration occurs during the print process, thus creating a ghosting effect.
This is especially evident on small text, or small lines 12pt and smaller. In order to fix this, we require that ALL small texts be created with 100% black, 0% Cyan, Magenta, and Yellow.

FONT REQUIREMENTS
Font problems are unquestionably responsible for more job delays and frustrations than any other areas of digital file production. However, they can be avoided once you know what to look for and how to properly organize them.
Postscript Type 1 fonts for Macintosh
Postscript Type 1 fonts consist of two parts: the SCREEN font and the PRINTER font. The screen font is a bitmap image of the letterforms used to represent the type on screen. Screen fonts are usually collected in a “suitcase”, which can contain fonts from many different families. For proper organization of your screen fonts, it is best to put each font family in its own font suitcase.
The printer font contains the data that is actually sent to the laser printer or RIP and is used to correctly render each character. If the printer fonts are not available or damaged, your font will look “jagged” on screen. It will either print the same bitmapped appearance or convert automatically to a default system font such as Courier.
It is thus important to send both the screen and printer components for each font used in your document. This includes fonts used for EPS files as well (EPS ad that are linked in a publication are notorious for containing fonts not included with the job, as they are often created from a different source). Many fonts with the same name, such as Helvetica, are manufactured by more than one company and may have differences in kerning values, letter weight, etc. In cases where we may have a different font from the one you used, there is a possibility that your text copy might re-flow after applying our version of the font.
TrueType Fonts for Macintosh
The TrueType format was developed by Macintosh and is now widely distributed with system software, applications and on disks of font collections. The most obvious difference between Type 1 and TrueType is that both screen and printer data are contained in one file where Type 1 has two separate files.TrueType fonts are also stored in a font suitcase and should never be mixed with Type 1 screen fonts. Doing so will occasionally cause problems when printing.
It is also important to know the following:
- Check your font license agreement. Generally, it is an acceptable practice to supply a copy to a Service Provider in order to output your job.
- Send both screen and printer fonts (for Type 1 fonts).
- If you have embedded EPS files that include text not converted to curves, send the fonts for those images as well.
- Avoid mixing True Type and Type 1 fonts in the same file.
- If all fonts have been supplied yet your Service Provider seems to still have a problem with your file, you could try to embed all fonts or convert text to curves to avoid having to send font files. However, this isn’t always possible or advisable.
