Technical Update: Full ISO 12647-2 Color Standard Compliance

In mid-2006 we came up with a new system that required our valued advertisers to submit digital files of your ads together with calibrated/profiled contract proofs. These contract proofs, which conform to ISO-12647-2 color specification for coated paper using ISOcoated ICC profile, has indeed proven to be instrumental in achieving our goal in minimizing color discrepancy with that of our final print.

Once again, in line with our desire to serve you better, we would like to ask for your support as we shift to conform to an updated standard of the ISO-12647-2 using ISOcoated_v2_eci ICC profile effective February 2008 issues and strict compliance by June 2008 issues. This attempt at adopting an improved standard aims to facilitate more harmonious graphic communication and reproduction among printers, print buyers, repro houses and Summit Media. With this focus, we can also gain quality improvements, process stability, improved client relations and competitiveness..

Printing according to the new ISO-standard has major quality advantages for both producer and its clients. The major advantage we are trying to achieve is a PREDICTABLE & REPRODUCIBLE PRINT QUALITY at an International Level. Looking back when we last shifted to the previous version of the ISO-standard, color problems have dramatically dropped in the process, and the result is a more brilliant, more intensive color strength. In the updated standard, we expect to get the same result (regardless of the source, whether it is produced in any different part of the globe) within the applicable tolerances. All these will also help us in fast communication within the production chain, thus aiding us in faster delivery of our magazines.

Under the new system, we shall thus require you to send us an ISO-12647-7 compliant digital proof (minimum of 140gsm or thicker digital proofing paper) which shall serve as your contract proof. In place of our existing EFI Color Verifier chart ES1000, we shall be using a 46-patch Ugra/Fogra Media Wedge V2.0a or 2.2a to be printed side-by-side with the image on your digital contract proof. With this, we are expecting to yield a certified proof that is produced from different locations (pre-press supplier, advertising agency, or printing plant) which always has the same predictable high-quality print. The central point in the process, being the inspection strip, (UGRA/FOGRA Media Wedge) that is also printed in the contract proof, will make it easy for all the ends to measure the result through spectral analysis. With the use of the correct paper type and correct printing process, the quality can always be predicted, and also reproduced, in the case of repeat ads, or even across titles.

Furthermore, for quick and easy file delivery, we are employing a new online digital file delivery system (apart from our existing FTP site) with the help of QUICKCUT Digital Ad Validation and Delivery System (www.quickcut.com). It does not only offer quick 24-hour file transfer capability, it also facilitates file checking according to our specifications including the application of industry-standard ICC profiles (ISOcoated_v2_eci.icc) and printable PDF file format (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 standard and PDF versions 1.3 & 1.5) from your desktop.

To aid you in proper creation of digital files for submission to Summit Media, we have prepared a CD that contains file conversion instructions, our ICC profile settings, UGRA/FOGRA media wedge v2.0a and 2.2a and other useful guidelines. However, we would still gladly accommodate your request for assistance regarding this matter so please don’t hesitate to email me at intet.victoriano[at]summitmedia.com.ph or Bong Carolino bong.carolino[at]summitmedia.com.ph or call me at telefax. no.
