Men's Health transforms Piolo Pascual from pretty boy to bad boy

Jan2010_magcover_Men_s_Health.jpgLooking at Piolo Pascual now, it’s easy to forget that he didn’t have a smooth ride on the road to stardom. Then known as PJ Pascual, he hardly made a ripple in the local entertainment scene when he tried his luck back in the early to mid-90s. But a hiatus in the States only toughened his resolve that an acting career was truly what he was meant to pursue, and he made the decision to stick it out in the business for a second time around.

“Ang hirap to become recognized in the business. I had to start from scratch and you can’t complain,” Piolo tells Men’s Health in their January issue, “That was the toughest time of my life because I just had to prove myself… Yung constant struggle to be better at what you do, [that] pushed me.”

The fighter in Piolo comes out in the Fight Club-inspired photoshoot, where his pretty boy looks take a beating. The Piolo in Men’s Health’s pages takes heavy blows and wears his purple bruises and bleeding cuts proudly—battle scars that know no end as he continues to grapple with the intrigues that come his way.

“I’m not the type that will harbor grudges towards anyone,” says Piolo, who also admits that his faith is responsible for this outlook, “Parang you think, ‘is it worth it?’ Is it going to make you a better person? At the end of the day, iisipin mo kung nakabubuti ba sa pagkatao mo, sa isang tao kung papatulan mo.”

Piolo is clearly driven to succeed in the business, and it shows in his quest to constantly improve in his craft. This drive and resilience also extends to other areas in his life, as he tells Men’s Health about his desire to focus more on sports this year. Holding a soft spot in his heart is running, as he talks about running 5-10K every other day. “I want to be better that’s why I train every other day,” he says, despite clocking in an impressive 4:47 per kilometer on his very first race. “The same as with working out, you always challenge yourself. You always want to be better with whatever you do.”
