Target Market

The K-Zoners are grade school boys (80%) and girls (20%), 8 to 12 years old who are fun-loving and eager to experience new things. They are well-connected, outspoken, and updated.

THEY HAVE SUPER POWERS
  • SPENDING POWER
Thanks to weekly allowances, birthday and Christmas money, and generous grandparents, today's tweens have more disposable income. In fact, 70% of K-Zoners get an allowance.
  • PESTER POWER
According to Marshal Cohen, chief analyst for market researcher NPD Group, kids can already influence what's purchased for the family as early as age three. So do not underestimate their nagging voice. They are very vocal about what they want and do not want. Their parents listen to them because they don't want to waste their money on something their kids don't want.
  • PARTICIPATION POWER
Families have become a consensus-seeking group, where the kids' opinions are integral to household decisions. Therefore, kids are playing a more active role in deciding the brands the family uses. In fact, 91% of K-Zoners help in doing the groceries, while 58% choose a specific brand to ask mom and dad to buy.

Research company Millward Brown says, "A one-target marketing strategy may no longer be enough. Consider one strategy that appeals to tweens, another that appeals to tweens and their parents, and a third that focuses just on adults."

  • Earn and maintain trust from both parents and children.
  • Mobile branding and maximizing a mix of media channels is the way to go.
  • Learn tweenspeak. Kids like things that are fun and brands who speak to them as individuals, as decision makers. They don't want to be talked down to.
  • Tweens hate to be sold to, but love to be respected. They want to be listened to, heard and understood. Spend time with them, listen to them talk, and discover how they dream.

Furthermore, according to Media Awareness Network, a non-profit organization that focuses on media literacy programs for the youth, kids are the adult consumers of the future. The most logical thing to do is to plant the seeds of brand recognition in young people, hoping that these seeds will grow into brand loyalties that will last a lifetime.
